Jam-Stuffed Bread Rolls: A Sweet Breakfast Treat
Wake up to the delightful aroma of freshly baked bread with a sweet twist. These jam-stuffed bread rolls are soft, fluffy, and come with a heartwarming surprise in the middle. They are perfect for a leisurely breakfast, paired with your favorite cup of coffee or tea.
Ingredients:
- 120ml (½ cup) warm milk
- 50g (4 tbsp) sugar
- 7g (1 1/2 tsp) dry yeast
- 35g (3 tbsp) softened butter (for the dough)
- 5g (1 tsp) salt
- 1 egg
- 300g (2 1/2 cups) 00 flour
- 40g (3 tbsp) butter (for brushing)
- Jam of your choice
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the warm milk, dry yeast, and egg. Slowly incorporate the flour and salt, mixing continuously until you have a cohesive dough.
- Rest and Knead: Once the initial dough is formed, set it aside for 15 minutes to let the yeast activate and the dough to relax. After this resting period, add the softened butter and knead the dough for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Shape the dough into a ball, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Rolls: Once the dough has risen, divide it into 9 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball. Flatten each ball and place a small dollop of your favorite jam in the center. Carefully fold the edges of the dough over the jam and seal it, shaping it back into a ball.
- Second Rise: Arrange the jam-stuffed dough balls in a 20cm baking pan, ensuring there’s some space between each roll for expansion. Cover and set aside for another hour, allowing them to rise again.
- Preheat and Bake: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Before baking, brush the tops of the bread rolls with an egg wash (a beaten egg mixed with a splash of water or milk) for a golden finish. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped.
Serving Suggestion: These bread rolls are best enjoyed warm. The melted jam in the middle pairs wonderfully with the soft bread, making for a comforting and satisfying bite. You can sprinkle some powdered sugar on top for an added touch of sweetness, or serve alongside some fresh fruit. Enjoy!
Note: The type of jam you use can greatly influence the taste of the bread rolls. Opt for high-quality jams with natural flavors for the best results.
